is it normal to have hot pixels on brand new cameras? i am thinking of taking it back to the shop next week

hot pixel are 'normal' eventually for most cameras. Though certainly not normal on brand new cameras, especially if it is dead in the centre of the frame!

I'm not up on Nikons but e.g. on Minolta/Sony DSLRs you can just map out stuck pixels.

Can't get exif from your photo so is it a hot pixel (i.e. only appears in long exposures) or a stuck pixel?
actually I can't see anything in your picture - just black.

Look at the large version. The sort of blue dot dead centre.

Although I've also heard hot pixels are normal in cameras, and there's supposedly a tolerance of sorts as to how many, I wouldn't be too happy with one that's dead smack centre.

When does it show though?

I had exactly the same hot pixel on my brand new D90 I bought in December. I took it back to the shop 2 weeks later after I noticed and got it swapped for a new camera no problems at all.

its actually a stuck pixel its there at all iso settings and all exposures even iso 100 and 1/4000th its actually in the lower left corner, i did a crop for flickr but its not come out as clear after upload to flickr as it is on the originals on my computer.

I am a little disshartened by it as its the second problem ive had, the charger didnt work on the first one and had to get it replaced and now the stuck pixel, i will take it back to jessops as its so new, i am thinking of making the move to canon!?! though. Ive not found any 1000d problems on the net so might make the move to that???

Stuck pixels can effect any brand of camera, i think the tolerance is around 0.01% or something which equates to more than a few pixels lol.
If the pixel is apparent at all iso's and shutter speeds you should take it back. If its only apparent on long exposures or ISO's over 800 then you need to weigh up the real world impact it will have on your images.
