When I shot a 12min exposure photo last night at ISO 200 the amount of hot pixels was apalling...its like someone had sneezed on my photo.

Shooting with a 400D - how can I aviod such moments?
 
Have you switched on the long exposure noise reduction?
 
Turning it on will help drastically but beware that the time you have to wait between shots is equal to the duration of the shot because it actually takes another of equal time but with the shutter closed, if you catch my drift. Sorry if I'm just teaching you to suck eggs.
