Any wobble will create a potential permanent break in the contacts and possibly break something. Can you check with another camera/flash of the same models?

It's quite common on Canons, all you need to do is tighten up the wee screws that hold the hotshoe in place and all will be well again in ham-land

I would be suprised if the hotshoe on the camera breaks. The foot on the flash will certainly break before the hotshoe. Cost of a new foot on a flash is around £40.

Yeh, its a common fault when you get big heavy FGs on the top. I have a (cheapish) flashgun bracket SH from FeeBay and an OC cord that stops all that!

Have a look at THIS not your camera, but almost the same applies!

That's absolutely cracking thank you.

Now I'll know what to do if (when) mine should do it, (1DmkII/550EX).
Thanks to OP for question and for the replies.

Glad all's ok mate!

had the same prob on my 5d about 6 months later had to send of for repair camera no aotu focus dont know if the hot shoe corsed the prob need a new curcit board in side to take as a warning

Better not to tighten too often or the threads will wear and it will never stay tight.

Take the screws out and give them a tiny drop of thread lock, tighten them down and forget about it. Done this on my 1dII and it never came loose again :D
