Managed to get this yesterday, which I'm quite pleased with.

Excellent! What lens shutter and DOF?

Shutter: 1-250 sec

Aperture: F/11

ISO: 100

Flash Fired.

Just got the exif, hope you don't mind Torpedo :)

I've just been out trying to get a shot similar to that. I don't think I managed it, but I got a few hovers in mid-flight. Or should that be mid-hover? :D

Cheers guys. EXIF should be embedded.
It was taken with A Canon 20D and a sigma 150mm f2.8 macro.
AV mode, at f11, with the built in flash (set at -2/3 FEC), which synchs a 1/250s.
It's not perfect, as i think the focus is very slightly off (the back is sharper than the front), but I've tried a few times in the past and failed miserably. But was quite please with this one.

EDIT: Cheers Ewan, you must have submitted whilst i was typing.

For anyone looking to capture hovers in flight...

I found it easier to look for one of the species that take up residence over a patch of grass. They will stay within a few inches of the same spot for a fair while. Then they suddenly dart off as something flying nearby has caught their eye as a potential mate and the check it out. Invariably they return to the same spot or close by. Not quite sitting ducks but a bit more predictable than those near to plants and flowers.
