Yes
to turn VR or other image stabilisation off before removing, or fitting a lens?

I do try to remember but have done it a few times by mistake with no obvious adverse effects. Am I likely to have done any damage?

IS/VR should only be active when your focusing, so as long as you don't try and focus when your taking the lens off it should have no effect whatsoever. For the record, I've never turned mine off when removing a lens.

Best just to turn the camera off. This also is best for helping to keep the sensor clean. When the camera's on, the sensor is charged and can attract dust and other nasties!

Surely the easiest solution is to turn the camera off first? which I almost always do unless i forget it is on

As far as I'm aware, you don't need to switch it off when changing the lens, just make sure your camera is switched off.

You got me thinking, so quickly looked at instruction manual for one of my IS lenses and doesn't mention anything.

I only turn things off when they go back in my bag, with the exception I turn auto focus and IS off when I do pans.

I thought the only time that VR should be turned off was when connected to a tripod?

surely it works using the power from the camera, so, turn the camera off when changing lenses and it won't be an issue, and as pointed out above, cuts down on it attracting dust! :)

Me too

Although I sometimes wonder if it's just sheer forgetfulness or that I just can't be bothered. It's never done any harm though.

The only time there is even a slight possibility of damaging the IS/VR is if it is active when the lens is removed.

But since it switches itself off 2 seconds after removing your finger from the shutter release button, you'd have to be damn quick to catch it out.
