How did he do that?

Yes
Hi,

My sister in law just got married and had a wedding tog with a canon 30d with 24-105mm f3.5-4.5 non is lens and had a canon flashgun.

He took a mix of shots outside in the sun and daylight and some inside in low light.

Seen all of them and they are all stunning!

How would he have got such good shots indoors with no IS and a 4.5 aperture when zooming in?

There was no noise at all (i know you can use noise ninja and similar but you lose overall sharpness then. These were sharp!)

All shots were handheld.

Is IS really that needed for wedding photography?

Sounds like good technique to me - maybe he was brought up on ye olde film cameras - all we had way back then was manual/mechanical everything...
You don't need IS or VR if you stay above a certain shutter speed at a given focal length and if he was shooting with fill-in flash, he may well have stayed above the bare minimum...

Outside was very bright and sunny so that was probably easier to get no shake with no IS but indoors he was right to the back and zooming in almost fully to 105 so at f4.5 and 105mm with say 800iso (cant see it being any higher iso as the pics are spot on) what would his shutter have been?

P.S If i was outside and got say 750 shutter speed on a non IS lens and an IS lens at 100mm would there be any difference in blur? Is IS only good when the shutter speed drops to a point of shake and it just enables you to go slower by a few stops?

If so would it be better to just buy a lens with say fixed f2.8 with no IS as that would let your shutter go faster by a few stops anyway wouldnt it?

With a 105 (which isn't that 'long'...) you could get away with 30th sec with a steady hand and some practice - time the moment to minimise subject movement...

It appears that he's just good...some people are, you know...lol

What make lens? I'm not aware of a 24-105mm f3.5-4.5 non IS lens

Perhaps he was using a Canon EOS 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Lens

I have an example of this lens and have been very pleased with the results achieved. (One of Canon's cheaper older lenses that compares favourably to current modern day equivalents)

Sorry my mistake yes i meant the canon 28-105.

Looked a super lens and for the results he produced i cant think of a reason to warrant the extra £ to get the IS version

Considering this is an oldish lens and from the review above it claims it sufferes from strong barrell distortion at 28mm and pincushion at 50-105 do you think a newer superzoom would offer as good or better results (18-200 or 28-200)?
