How do I check if my lens is soft?

I've gt a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 the none HSM one, and I'm finding it a little soft, i'm not sure if it's me as I was using in manual focus at the Velodrome in Manchester last weekend, or if I've actually got a duff one.

What's the best/quickest/simplest way to check if it's just me or that the lens needs re-calibrating? I'll get some pics up to show what I'm talking about later today.

Do some shots using a tripod in good light and maybe take pictures of news print or magazines. Also take them as RAW images and review them in your conversion program so you can add sharpenning as required.

Thanks for the suggestion AndyB, I'll give it ago and then go from there depending on the results.
