How do I choose the correct background colour?

I am new to trying to take photographs correctly. I have been taking photos of clothing and have found that using different backgrounds either helps or hinders the colour of the garment I want to photograph. I don't have any idea why this is and therefore don't know what colour background to try and all of this 'trial and error' takes a disproportionate length of time and above all, I don't learn a single thing about which background colour would best suit a garment that I want to photograph as everything is hit and miss with me.
I would be very grateful if someone would help me on this aspect please.

Could you post some pictures? Just to make sure we understand what are you talking about
 
I agree - difficult to advise without seeing what youre trying to photograph- failing that use a white BG :p
