I'm trying to copy my time machine backups from a small 250gb portable that i want to format to FAT32 so i can use it on my windows machine as well as my Mac, but when i try to drag the files from my old drive to my new drive it get the message "Error code 1426". What am I doing wrong, or is ti not possible to copy backups to another drive?

Thanks

Kev

Thanks JasonRS, I'll give it a try when i get home tonight.

What Jason said. Or you could try CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, which may be a little bit more user friendly. Both are free.

It's not anywhere as simple as this. If you change the Time Machine location your mac won't recognise it anymore. There are things you can do to change this but it involves quite a lot of terminal use. If you go to the apple.com user forums you should find the info you need there

They don't work with Time Machine drives, due to the way they create soft links as opposed to hard ones.

Disk Utility's the way to go, just following the instructions in that blog post you've linked to should do the job!

No really, I've tried it using the directions from that blog. It failed. If you do this make sure you check it first before you wipe your old time machine.

Oh cr**!!
I'm currently using SuperDuper to backup my TM drive onto a portable which lives offsite in my desk drawer. I was under the impression that should the worst happen I could just plug the backup disk in, follow the instructions and go. Looks like this wouldn't have worked for two reasons now :(

Thanks for pointing this out, much better to find out now than when I actually need to use them. Time to go and have a rethink

Drive you're copying to needs to be in HSF Mac format, FAT32 doesn't support anything larger then 4GB. I've moved my Time Machine backup the (computername.sparsebundle) file to another drive, then just pointing the time machine backup to that disk and it carried on without a hitch

JasonRS i have tried what was suggested in the blog you posted the link too earlier, but I get the message "Could not restore - Operation not permitted". The drive I am copying to is formatted as Mac OS extended (Journaled) with a GUID partition table, the one i am copying from is Mac OS extended (Journaled, Case sensitive) with a GUID partition table.

I have my previous drive (Time machine backups) in the source area and the drive i am copying to in the Destination area, I then click restore, is this correct? Does the drive i am copying to need to be empty before i start?

Thanks

Kev

I had the same thing happen then right near the end of the backup it said "Operation not permitted" thingy

That's how I did it too...
