Yes
Im due to do a few shoots for various people, these will be my first and Im wondering how to go around putting copy right on my picture.

Is it as simple as putting my name on the picture? detail on the properties?

any advice welcome as I have never been down this path before

thanks

You automatically own the copyright to the photo once it has been shot (presuming you havn't signed anything to say you're handing it over).

A watermark tells people you are the owner of the picture but legally you own it anyway.

Any advice how to do a watermark? Using cs4? On nights so can't use google, if it's googable just say so :-)

In windows/pc its alt plus 0169 Mac is alt G i think

I dont think this works if you dont have a side numbers panel i.e. on smaller laptops (mine is 15") they do not have the numbers at the side

Although you will automatically own the copyright in the photos you take, that does not mean that the people you give/sell the prints to will understand what copyright means.

You need to have an agreement with those people, preferably in writing, stating what they can and cannot do with the pictures. This is, in effect, a "licence".

If its a "family and friends" type of thing, you may just want to ensure that they do not give/sell the photos to a third party - eg a publisher, or anyone who may be able to profit from them. You would probably also want to ensure that they are not used on a third party website either, even if there is no payment involved.

If you're doing a"job" you need to be more precise with your wording to make sure YOU do not get ripped off!

If you want to learn more about copyright, you could log on to

www.own-it.org

which is specialist intellectual property website.

They have, for example, an (online) info sheet about IP for visual artists.

picture shark

easy peasy, and lighting fast
you can make your watermark in any photo package and go from there

example, both main logos are watermarks with picture shark

start > run > type in "charmap"

or even iirc start > the little space you use for searching for your programs > "charmap"

that'll bring you up your symbols and stuff if you're having problems, just copy and paste from there :)

(will also tell you the alt+values)

Yes - it should be in System Tools (Start, Programmes, Accessories, System Tools) as well. Character map that is.
