How do i get a shot like this?

we eventually figured it out by looking at the other images on her website - it's an off-camera flash on a stand...

dohh

thanks arkady...i really thought it was a doorway

Subject bright and background dark? You want to drop ambient light as much as you can with a fast shutter speed and blast the subject as much as you can with flash. The closer the subject is to the flash, and the further they are away from the background, the darker the background will look. So in indoor conditions something like ISO 100 at your max sync speed and F11 or higher should make the background pretty dark (or go even faster than sync speed with FP mode). It's the basis of 'turning daylight into night' with flash photography.

set it to the green square or use a point and click camera

I want to do something similar.
i.e. taking a shot in the (low light) pit garage keeping the person sharp and well lit, and the background as black as possible.
