How do I Keep my knees clean?

I was wondering what people use to kneel,on/sit on when out taking photos. I tried a carrier bag on soft ground, but it ended up sinking a bit and I didn't stay clean ( but much cleaner than I would of been), is there anything people use with success?
 
One of those kneeling pads that gardeners use should do it. Plenty of choice on Amazon
 
Carrier bag with an old newspaper in it is what the scouts and guides recommend for a makeshift kneeling pad
 
Clean is not really an issue, but cold and wet is.
 
If a carrier bag is not big enough , then how about those larger plastic bags that are kindly delivered free several times a week, mine always arrive nicely packed flat to easily fit in camera bag, they even add a pen sometimes so I can note down where I took the photos.

Ooh I like that:thumbs:. I currently use what I think was once either a fitness workout mat or a groundmat for camping:thinking:. I often lie down, when on grass, to take photos and this does the job well. It's very light too.
 
I always have a bin bag in camera bag, but also often wear Jack Pyke waterproof trousers, and or just get wet and muddy. I've just bought a pair of mud coloured trousers which don't keep me dry but at least I can pop to the shops in the way home without as many disgusted looks!
 
when doing macro stuff, I use builders knee pads from B&Q. Extremely comfortable, keeps your knees dry and I can be on them for ages setting upshots without any bother

I even use them for shooting american football where I need to move around a lot and need to shoot low

This.

I use them when shooting landscapes on rocky ground, I shoot mostly low down and they really save your knees.
 
Dirt has never been an issue for me but years of cold and wet being ignored (combined with other factors such as overweight) have resulted in knees that are almost FUBAR! I use a gardening kneeling pad to protect what's left of them which keeps them dry and relatively warm, with the resulting cleanliness being an unneeded bonus. A piece of camping matress works well too, or any piece of highish density closed cell foam. External knee pads work very well but aren't so good for walking about in - the ones that are built into trousers are less of a problem when walking.
 
Some good suggestions here. I'd agree about a piece of the closed cell foam camping mattress. A whole mattress can be had for well under a fiver and it can be easily cut up as needed.

It also has the advantage that it can be sat on too.

The missus won't believe I've been out taking photos if I haven't got a mucky left knee.

Black bin bag / carrier bag at times but still usually end up with soggy knee :)

I use these too... I only put it on the right knee as I always kneel down on that knee so the left knee is always off the ground.
 
Get some of the trousers that carpet fitters use with spaces for pads in the knees already in them. They're good hardwearing and not too expensive. My problem isn't getting dirty knees, I often get them when out taking pics, but getting back up after I've been on my knees in the first place.

They do if you buy decent onces and Nik wax them on a regular basis;)

If you buy decent oil skins they will. Like the ones fishermen use.

But yeah, for me it'd be an old pair of jeans and just suck it up.
 
People should pay attention to Nods warning.


I have fisherman style trousers, but a bit ott if it isn't raining and it is just the ground that is wet. I like the roll up Matt and also the gardening pads. Will investigate both of these.

As said anything waterproof will not stay waterproof if in constant contact with the ground etc. and in reality I'm not going to wax them as I will forget.
 
Hire an assistant. Get them to do all of the dirty work whilst you swan around waving your hands about shouting loudly about the quality of the light. It'll make you look really pro.
 
Just wear old trousers :D
Nod is right tho if its wet I wear.waterproof ones
If you get decent ones and wear wellies you can kneel down all day in a bog I know cos I often do :)
