I have bought genuine Hoya before from Maxsaver (formerly HVstar), the prices are very good and delivery is about 5 days from Hong Kong.

I have bought most of my filters from there and had no trouble.

Just get one from WEX and be done with it...might be a quid or two more expensive, but you'll know it's genuine...

I've never seen a fake filter, but I imagine they would not be coated. In which case it would be easy to tell.

Single coating generally reflects light blue off the surface, and multicoating darker and usually green. Either way, no coating reflects clear white.

Another vote for Crooked Imaging, pukka bloke and good prices/service. The only certain way to make sure you get the genuine article is to buy from an official source.

I have a "Hoya" circular polarizer, it appears to be no more than some dark plastic sandwiched in between two pieces of glass (un coated). The glass is not tight and the plastic appears to be wavy.
When I look through it, the scene changes shade from a blue hue to a brown hue.

I have a sneaky feeling it is fake:thumbsdown:

Buy from a reputable source, don't learn the hard and expensive way.

onestop-digital gets my vote - bought my Hoya HD CPL from them - very competitively priced too!

anyone got experience buying from Amazon? Never had a problem with them before, and I like using them. I don't have a credit card so apart from Amazon, which luckily still accepts Debit cards, a lot of online buying options are out for me. Excuse me for being dumb, but I've never heard of Crooked imaging... I thought flash was pulling my leg.

I'll see if I can find any of the stores mentioned in Glasgow.

It's run by the Crook family http://www.crookedimaging.co.uk/

I use Amazon a lot, including for filters. I know a lot of Amazon stuff is supplied by third parties, but it's all backed and guaranteed by Amazon.

You'll have no trouble getting a refund if it's dodgy. They have an excellent returns system - you can even print out a pre-paid returns label. Just bung it back in the post and instant refund.

Genuine hoyas have very faint green reflections. Fakes reflect much more and have different tint. There is a difference with the writing on the rim, and even the box.

Normal Hoya HMC filters are fine. I have another Super HMC and can't spot the difference. Just don't get the blue or green (non coated).
