How do I recover photos from my camera after accidentally formatting my SD card?

I use the full version of RescuePro from SanDisk - I have only had to use it once in anger but it recovered everything on the card not overwritten and for that reason alone I keep it updated. I always write to two cards simultaneously and download to hard drive asap, check files before re-formatting for next event.
 
When you delete or format an image or card you'r not really deleting it. What your actually doing is removing it from a lookup table or map. That means normally it will no longer be listed or shown. The likes of Recuva look past that list for complete files and use that to restore the lookup table or map.
I'm not very good at putting it into words but maybe you get the idea.

Yep, another vote for Recuva. It has saved me a few times.
