How do you achieve this?

I believe that's achieved just using lens zoom. I.e. Camera on Tripod, start to zoom and take a photo.

Similar effects can be achieved by using a slow shutter speed while zooming. I suspect this may have been done by moving the camera though but could be wrong.

Usually to get that effect with a car a rig is attached to the car itself with the camera while the car is moved then photo shopped out after. But again there a few different ways of getting the same end result.

The lens has just been zoomed during the exposure. You'll need to stop down to get a decently long exposure time. If you were wanting to shoot a car and have it reasonably sharp in the image, the idea is to focus on the car then fire the shutter and pause briefly before zooming (while the shutter is still open).

Cheers for the swift responses :)

In the past (35mm days) I tried the lens-zoom technique with little success, and after coming across this image I wondered if there was a better way to acheive a decent result. So, I'll give it a bash again at some point using the given advice and see how it goes. As far as the focal-point bit's concerned, it'd probably be best to take a separate still and p/shop it in afterwards during the PPing.

a little flash can help in a dark enviroment!

I like that 33L !

The shot in the op looks to be of a bike lane, so I would suggest it was possibly taken whilst riding a bike down the said lane. Speed of the bike would determine how slow a shutter speed would be needed.

It could have been done several ways, either by zooming the camera during a slow-ish shutter speed, by moving the camera and shooting with a slow-ish shutter speed (riding a bike with camera attached maybe) or done in photoshop with zoom blur like this pic below.

Gotcha!

Wayne, that pic is a stunner

I think the post-processing method will yield the best & most consistent result and is less of an arseache to doing it with the camera and some rig/ technique.
