How do you choose?

I am finally in the money for a new lens, its deciding which one I want or is better for me.

So how do your lot think or decide with the "oh I'll have that one this time"?

I am thinking of buying a 24-105mm or a 70-200mkII L series canon lenses but can not decide on which?

I have the money for a 24-105 but do i save that bit more an get a 70-200?

It is properly doing my head in now...:|
 
Really simple this - just get the one that has the focal lenth range you are likely to use the most, then get the other at a later date.

I do a combination of the two though. I like my 18-135 as it gets some good photo's at the 18-100mm range and only when the weather is properly good do i only ever use the 81-135mm range.

But the weight and size of the two are hugely different aswell..
 
And to throw a complete spanner into it, should I get a 430exII or some thing diff?
 
I only have the flash that came on the camera.

Would the flash and a 24-105 seem better than saving for a 70-200 2.8 mk2?
 
As has been said before - if you find yourself limited by the lens you have ("oh if only I'd had a shorter/longer lens") then get a different focal length lens that covers it...

Have a flashgun, not used it more than a handful of times but you might enjoy different photographs to me...
 
My advice would be to go back through the photos you have enjoyed taking and note down the focal lengths you have used. Then look for a lens to match.
 
remember on a crop camera the shortest the 24-105 will give is 38mm whilst your current lens is just below 29mm so do you want to lose that 10mm option?
Re the flash I very rarely use the 2 flash guns I have so unless you feel the need I would suggest stick to lenses and have you thought about a 10-22, with canon cash back its not badly priced.
 
a 10-22 is very little focal length for me, i some times take pictures up close but occasionally want to take a photo thats further away, like a walk about lens.
