Just wondering how you get your photos printed and what looks best.
Do you get them in gloss or matt?
What size usally , 4x6, 5x7, 8x6, 10x8...?
And where do you get them done?

I usally get matt just for small photos at snappy snaps but the other day i got a few done at tesco, bw 8x6 glossy only 25p per photo, and i think there quite gd. would prob. of liked 10x8 better.

What looks best?

I rarely print smaller than 16x12" - unless it's wedding album shots etc.

BIG, and satin.

Although most of my prints are 8x12 I've also done 19x11, 18x12 and 24x18.

Do you use an SLR for your shooting? If so I would suggest you use 3x2 format not 4x3. :)

Change the ratio by cropping, exactly how depends on the s/w you're using. If you don't crop then the printing h/w will just lose equally from either side.

6x4 is 3:2 but 7x5, 8x6 will lose a bit off the sides. Of course you don't have to crop before printing but sometimes it will help with the composition if you do.

thanks.
yh, how do you change the ratio?

If using an SLR your ratio (for the photo) will be in the 3x2 format, so to print without loosing bits of your photo you should use 6x4, 12x8, 18x12 etc.

If you use a compact/bridge(?) camera your photos will be in 4x3 format and so will print in 8x6, 12x8, 16x12 without loosing any part of your photo.

If you have to print your SLR images using 4x3 format it would be best to crop your images to fit before you send them to print as pxl8 said in his post.:)

Thanks,pxl8 and amp34.
i did notice they cropped them and i now have edited them for next time i print. i might try 12x8 then . Also where do u get yours done? and roughly how much?
cheers.

The ones I have had done for me are 10x8" for a portraity sort of pic thats for the mantlepiece. The other is about 30x20" plus the frame and mount and thats watching me from the wall :suspect:
Mine are done at togsprint not just because he does good prints, but also because I like the feedback I get

I'm just starting out but my only prints so far I've got at 18x16" and I think they look great at that size. I was pointed in the direction of a guy who does the printing well and cheaply and that's the only size he does so for now I'm sticking with that. I'm not too keen on glossy...

Got my friend's mum a picture of him done at Jessops for 39p the other day though, 7x5 glossy. Not too bad :) Think I might be getting a fiver for it too, so not bad at all :D

both formats work without crops for 12 x 8???

Sorry, meant 10x8 on the compact front (having said that that doesn't work with the 4x3 ratio either...)

Anyone know why there are so many weird sizes out there? Was it a standard size for canvases when painting?

12x8 is 3:2 format. I use 12x8 and 18x12 for my DSLR prints so I don't have to crop the image ratio.

I use Loxley Colour Matt which is superb.

For personal use I go for 12x8 or 15x10. I'm a big fan of the metallic prints supplied by Loxley and I use them almost exclusively now - they really are superb.

For me it depends entirely on the image and what I will be doing with it, some images imo need a decent art paper and would look pants just printed on normal gloss...

Is metallic really worth the extra over lustre?

I got some more prints 2day from DScolour labs, there amazing for the money. Gonna be using them again.

Generally I download keepers to CD.The ones I really like I print A3 or A4 on my Canon printer and keep in Rexel folders.Different pics get different paper finish some matt some glossy. Some I have even had the audacity to frame. One of the best was taken with a nifty fifty.

I SIGN UP TO FORUMS TO PRETEND I HAVE PURCHASED FROM A COMPANY THAT I OWN.
I THINK MY POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS AND THE FORUMS ADMIN MUST BE STUPID ENOUGH TO FALL FOR IT

r you lot talking in Cm or inch??

What are the right sizes for printing from a DSLR without losing any image?? i have 6x4 paper and recently got some 7x5 as i wanted some a little bigger, but some have a lot cropped off when i print them out, i did this a while back so im not sure which was which, is there a definate size that is better??

Im still very new to printing and colour space ect.. it all gives me a head ache!! lol.. i wish i was young again...

right, thank for that.. so 7x5 will crop then?

that'll be why when i try and fill the paper i lose heads!! lol.

OK, so for the family photos i should stick to 6x4.. thanks for that..
