How do you photograph the underground??

Saw on another thread pics of the london underground which looked stunning i travel on the tub everyday however when ever i take a picture especially while on an escalator it is very very dark and well a long exposure doesnt really work while you are moving and a flash seems very harsh so unless i bring a soft light with me how does someone capture a decent photo?
 
Fast lens with the aperture wide open if you're moving, slower shutter speeds if you're static.

Flash photography isn't allowed.
