Hi,
An agency I now shoot for have requested all shots are sent by FTP. They have given some info but what is it and how does it work?

If there is a tutorial somewhere....?

Cheers,

Dunc

FTP is a kind of web based windows explorer where your agency share space on their servers so that you can drag and drop the shots you take direct to them from your computer. You need a program dependent on your operating system to talk to their servers.

Most FTP programs are free so you don't necessarily have to pay for one :)

They will give you a server address, username and password. Put these into your FTP program and you are set to rock!

Add a network place in Windows Explorer and follow the instructions. You can then log on via Windows Explorer in your Network Places drop down (left hand side file view).

Oo good thought King.

Forgot about the explorer based interface.

No sweat.

:) and by that actually meant I am a mac convert :D

Actually - no. Mac has built in too! I prefer using a program - talks to work servers security features and adds another layer of protection when I have to conciously open program :)

Duncan - when we say explorer we mean the windows folders you browse to. Ie it shows up like 'My Documents' on your computer but is actually a connection to one of your employers servers.

Don't use the explorer method especially for sending to an agency. Download Filezilla...

Which agency is it?

Yep good advice. Had a mare trying to get the explorer based FTP working with servers without crash or drops.

what he said,

install filezilla, they will have given you a server name username and password, give those to filezilla it will login for you then you can copy the files over using file zilla ;)

:) it's all flooding back now - permissions in explorer were tricky too.

Can thoroughly recommend cyberduck for mac if needed.

Freelance, I'm hoping they will be a bit more supportive than my present outfit who shall remain nameless...... I would like to get into bigger and more gigs, maybe event work as well.

another vote for filezilla. while windows explorer can and does work find in most situation, filezilla is a little more user friendly and has auto-retry if the connection to the server drops etc.

No it isn't. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and it is a layer 7 (application layer) protocol in the OSI model.

In practical terms it is also the name for client software that transfers files to FTP server using the file transfer protocol. It can be as basic as a command line application that acts as an FTP client - open a command prompt in windows and type 'ftp' and you will get a basic file transfer program that acts as a client to FTP servers. Internet explorer implements its own FTP client and there are dedicated Windows based FTP clients as well - I use WS_FTP although they no longer seem to do a free version.

In basic terms - a drag and drop file explorer to an online server.... ie 'like' explorer. In practical terms.

Didn't want to blast the OP with jargon!
