How does that shutter operate?

Ok, my neighbour`s father owns a 550D, he has had it for a while but not exactly over used it. Whilst photographing a stain glass window in a church a while ago the camera slipped (don`t ask me how :D ) He has hold of the strap so the camera does not hit the floor and smash into a hundred bits. It must have took a jolt as he is getting error20. He took the camera in to a local store who sent if off and when it came back he was told it would be a new shutter @£250. I am trying to find out how the shutter is operated, my guess it is some kind of servo unit which is triggered by an electrical impulse :shrug: I can only find this video at the moment which @1.15 shows something I already know. Can anybody shed some light on this one for me? I might well be wrong but I would have thought the damage is not as bad as they are making out.

All he got back from them Pat is mechanical shutter problem.Which to me seems a little non descriptive. I had a quick look myself and all you get when you press the shutter is a quiet whirring noise,similar to that if you were to take a picture in Live view mode with a camera that has that facility.

He'd be better off buying another used one at around the repair estimate and selling the faulty one for spares or repair, unless he's putting an insurance claim in for accidental damage ;-)

a quick search on google has brought this up, it claims error20 is more mirror related - http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=13744076&postcount=6

but according to canon official site, error20 can be anything mechanical, so it could be something has been shifted out of place http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2012/eos_error_msgs.shtml

maybe drop it again? :D but in all seriousness i would think sell it for spares repairs and get a second hand body somewhere, might be an idea to upgrade to a 600D or something too :D

I saw that too. I had a similar occurance with one of my D2x bodies - using it fine and then it just jammed up.... the mirror mech just failed out of the blue and I ended up having to get a new mirror box fitted, which cost about £250.
