How does this backup solution sound

Been unhappy with my very confusing backup solution for a while, and have decided to rethink things.

Before I order any of the bits, I thought I would run it past a few of you to get your impressions

*This related MAINLY to photo backups of RAW files etc*
  1. Initiate Lightroom Import
  2. Import the master to my Internal WD Green 1TB Drive - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Dig...ternal/dp/B003SLE8H4/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
  3. Copy a duplicate to my WD NAS family storage drive, under a folder only I have any access to
  4. Once a day, have a sycnhronisation between my WG Green internal 1TB drive and an external USB Powered WD Elements 1TB drive which turns on and off with the PC
  5. All program files and Windows files are stored on an internal SSD drive

Does that sound secure to you? Anything you would change, drop, include etc?
 
so if i read that right youve got 3 copies?

1 - internal 1Tb
2 - NAS
3 - external 1Tb

sounds okay to me, the only thing i would add is maybe an off site if the worst should happen to your home? maybe get another external 1Tb USB and rotate one of those to work/parents.

Hi Neil, thanks for the reply :)

The only thing worrying me about the above setup, is the "green" drives. I have heard that they spin down when not in use (similar to turning them on/off - which is what I want to avoid) so if I left the PC for 10 minutes the drive would enter its sleep mode.
While this might be fine, its potentially something that could go wrong?
What do you think?

But unsure how I would use it in my configuration!
 
to be honest id say its swings and roundabouts, if you leave it spinning all the time that could have a lifespan cost alternatively something could fail at spin up and down.. to be honest thats why we have backups :) personally i let my NAS and backup spin down after 30 mins inactivity if i remember rightly.

ive got one of the USB2 versions of that IcyBox and use it as the backup to my NAS. handy but a little noisey boxes. i dont think youd gain anything as such by adding that or the terastation without knowing your size requirements and current usage.
 
Well my current Lightroom library is around 300GB, so well under the capabilities of all the drives I have, but as I have just started selling some of my work and doing paid photography - worry has set in.

Nothing indicates that any of my hard drives are about to fail - I am purely trying to find a robust system I am 100% comfortable with, that if something does fail, I will have a backup if required! Ideally, I don't want anything to fail lol.

I was thinking of using the IcyBox as a substitute for the NAS drive - so the revised system would be this

  1. Lightroom import to Internal 1TB WD Green Drive
  2. Duplicate copy to Icy Box (setup in RAID1 with 2x1TB non-green Drives)
  3. One per day sync through Synctoy of Internal WD 1TB Green drive to external USB 1TB WD Elements drive

Do you think that is a bit OTT?
 
whats the WD NAS? is it a single drive unit? if so thatd be the only real gain the IcyBox being a twin drive unit, but then if youve already got 3 copies having one of those mirrored is a little pointless/overkill.

the key point is multiple copies, the chances of all of your copies failing at the same time are.. well, youd probably be more likely to win the lottery :D
