How does this happen?

Took these two this morning, I'm just wondering how this works/happens? I've used no filters, or anything like that and can't work out why the pictures turned out this way - I like it, and I'd like to recreate it eventually but I'm not sure how it works!

I'm guessing in the first one, the flower was in the shade so it looks a lot darker, the whole shot looks under exposed but don't know why, nothing looks bright enough to cause it to dim . It also looks like the white balance got a bit confused.

Second shot, the flower was in direct sunlight, which also hits the leaf on the right, so it is much brighter than the leaves behind in the shade.

I'd guess you have the camera set to spot meter and you have metered off of the brighter flower, causing the exposure to be reduced. You may also have had a bit of negative exposure compensation dialled in on the first shot?

Awesome! Thank you both.
