Well, I ordered on Sunday night and got a delivery date of 14th July for my new Dell laptop. Imagine my surprise yesterday to get an e-mail saying that it was being dispatched and should be with me by Friday.

My tracking number was also forwarded, so I clicked on it. It says it's being delivered to my town, so that's a good start, and it's scheduled to be with me tomorrow. It will have travelled though. This is the tracking log so far:

  • Almaty, Kazakhstan 06/23/2011 3:12 P.M. Arrival scan
  • Koeln, Germany 06/23/2011 4:30 A.M. Package data processed by brokerage. Waiting for clearance. / Released by Clearing Agency. Now in-transit for delivery.
  • Incheon, Korea, Republic of 06/23/2011 10:55 A.M. Departure Scan
  • 06/23/2011 9:09 A.M. Arrival Scan
  • Shanghai, China 06/23/2011 6:01 A.M. Departure Scan
  • 06/23/2011 12:14 A.M. Export Scan
  • Shanghai, China 06/22/2011 11:55 P.M. Origin Scan
  • Koeln, Germany 06/22/2011 5:39 P.M. Package data processed by brokerage. Waiting for clearance.
  • China 06/22/2011 9:04 A.M. Order Processed: Ready for UPS

Interesting.......... I will update with anything new
 
Lets just hope that all the travelling from Germany to the Far East and back to Germany are not just to get it put in a box:)
 
Hahaha! Been there... ;-)

Mine went from China to Korea, then to Kazakstan, Warsaw, Germany and finally to the UK.

On the upside it arrived in absolutely perfect condition - the box was totally unmarked!

I plotted the times it arrived & departed from all these places, accounting for the time difference and came to the conclusion that all the Germany references were just where the whole process was controlled from. There wasn't physically time for the package to have gone via Germany all those times.

Hope yours arrives undamaged too!

Yes, Germany is where it is controlled from. I suspect that as Dell is such a large customer, they would pick up palettes of computers from their factory to a distribution hub in the UK and unpalette there.

Update at 5:03pm local, we've departed Kazakhstan :D Bets on it arriving in Warsaw based on jezgb post?

Who's a clever boy then. It's shipped by DHL World Ease which is described on DHLs website:

I have to say that watching my laptop on its journey provided me with hours of entertainment at work! ;)

Almost as good value as the laptop itself (which has turned out to be very good, BTW).

That log is slighty misleading if you don't know the way the system works. The package doesn't (obviously) travel from China to Germany and back again, all that happens is that the details are sent to the freight company's agent at the destination port ahead of the shipment to expedite Customs clearance, the goods themselves only went through Germany (as the first EU port) once....

No.. I know that ;) (as of now, it hasn't even reached the EU). I thought it was interesting it went China->Korea->Kazakhstan->transit though. I guess DHL have a hub where they import to Europe from.

My Alienware was made in Shanghai, went through a few countries before it arrived - but they do deliver fairly promptly despite the amount of places it seems to go through.

HAHA! I Have my shipping details as my Alienwares Desktop back ground.
Did a rough calculation on-line and found that it travelled roughly 21,000 air miles to get to me! The earth's equator is around 25,000 mile's! It made me wonder how much fuel was wasted delivering the Laptop to me.

Edit: Bet next place is Darlington/Donnington, Can't remember which one :P

Imported via Koeln Germany, then to Castle Donnington then Bristol and out for delivery. I have to say I think that's pretty impressive stuff....

It certainly is - it might go via almost everywhere in the world, but it never stays in one place long! I think the maximum time mine spent in any one country was 4 hours...

And delivered at 9:30am today. Which is a shame as I have a lot of work to do....
 
Similar thing happens with a lot of different companies. I remember getting an 2n Gen iPod from Apple back in 2002.

Went from Ireland>Begium>Holland>East Midlands Airport>Birmingham>Stoke.

Came past me 3 times before arriving (twice by air and once by road)

iPad went all over the middle east after it left China as well.

I'm loving 1920x1080 on a 15" laptop! ;)
 
my XPS just turned up, i didnt get a tracking number. doesnt have the illuminated keyboard, and my account manager seems to have gone awol...
 
Having now had the Dell for a few days, I've found it also has an inbuilt 3G modem/SMS system AND a GPS device, that I didn't know about when I bought it. Just ordered my free sim from T mobile and will use their £20/6 months internet service.
