How good is a canon 70-200 2.8 is with extenders ?

Has anyone used the 70-200 2.8 is mkI with the x2 extender.

I really like this lens and thinking of getting one but would have to sell my 100-400 to do so. I have used the 70-200 and really like it but would miss the extra reach, with a x2 extender ( not including crop ) it would be a 140-400 at 5.6 with extender.

Has anyone used this combination and if you can how does it compare to the 100-400.

I tried mine with a 2x, I found the quality of images not that great - quite soft, and slow to focus.
 
I think it copes ok with the 1.4x extender though so I hear - not tried it myself though I'm afraid.
 
I used mine with my 2x extender before getting a 300 2.8, and it was slow to focus, but given good light (so you can stop down) it can get good results. Hit and miss it seems though.. but I found mine 'acceptable'
 
I've tried the 1.4x extender on the 70-200 F4, F4 IS, F2.8 IS & F2.8 II IS - great on all of them.

The 2x extender is supposed to pretty good on the new MKII, I wouldn't have thought it was up to much on the others.

Swapped mine for the 100-400 and haven't looked back.
 
I agree. On the mark I the 2x is awful.
