Yes
Just in the middle of tempting my self with a new lens, how good is the is on a canon lens up to 200mm compared to a 200mm without

I might be moving from my tamron 70-300mm to a canon 18-200mm, tamron no IS but canon does and im thinking i can crop in to make the distance up if needed?

not tried any others ... but I like the canon IS :) it just seems to 'lock' the image when you half press

of coarse ... no good at all if the subject is moving !

The IS on my lenses is apparently good for 4 stops... I've handheld at 18mm at 1/3, and at 250mm at 1/30 and got reasonable results.

Wouldn't be without it!!

Very usefull and I think once you've had a lens with it, you'll see the benifits. I would say especially usefull over 200mm

Do you already have a lens covering your wider angle - I wouyld have thought the Canon 70-300 IS would be a better replacement for the tamron...

At 300mm the IS is brilliant.
As someone has said, it is no use for moving items, this isn't quite true.
The big advantage is it holds the image steady whilst you are framing your shot. You probably already know how difficult it is to hold it steady at 300mm, with the IS on, I usually get maybe a 1 to 2 mm sway at most, and very slowly.

Yea I have 18-55 IS and a 60mm macro

so I'm tempted with either 17-200 or 55-250 and still keep the tamron for 300mm tripod stuff

The Canon 55-250 IS lens gets very good results and in last months PhotoPlus they did a test / review of various zoom lenses and the 55-250 beat all (inc both 75-300 Canon lenses) other zooms tested.

I love the IS on the Canon lenses, saved God knows how many shots for me!!

I can vouch for the Canon 55-250mm IS. Amazing lens for the money.

i bought the 55-250 EFS IS when all i read were bad reviews. i think it's a cracking lens, and it seems people are wising up to it now.

go for it :D

i think i may just have to write a letter to santa clause!

then when you have one, get a Raynox DCR-250

that's on my list :D

This was taken on ISO1600 from about 60' @ 200mm/2.8 IS on at 1/40.

It wasn't intended as a great shot but to demonstrate what IS can do....
10/10 from me!
