hi guys, just wondering if there is much difference between the mk1 and mk2 of this lens, going to buy one but which is better and reasons why, also if you have one for sale please let me know as one needed for saturday....
If by MKII you're referring to the new Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX with Optical Stabilization then I'd also like to know more about it. I've found actual reviews about it quite scarce and not many image examples. They're mostly referring back to the previous non Optical Stabilized version. Mind you, it's a relatively new lens so.. ?
nope, there are Mark I and Mark II versions of this "Macro" lens. I think there are several versions even before that too. Either way considering it is professional grade, f/2.8, 70-200 glass, I think the price one pays for these is very good. The three things I've highlighted in bold don't normally come cheap!
if i were to buy a new one would it be MK2, or isn't that the case? is there any way of telling between the MK1 and 2?
also, what advantage does the image stabilisation have on a sony SLR which has IS in the body? i know the argument is that IS in the lens is supposed to be better but surely its not worth it if i have the option of steadyshot?
just bought one from ebay at £410, used twice only. Cant comment on IQ yet but a couple of test shots wide open look sharp enough. Autofocus is impressively fast on my D90 but it is really heavy, am going to practise with the monopod which i think will be a boon with this lens.
Impressive bit of kit!
cant see the OS version is worth getting, the price is way too close to the Nikon equivalent

indeed there are many different version over the ages.. if memory serves correctly..
EX
EX DG
EX DG macro
EX DG macro 2
EX DG OS
personally we have 2 of the first gen macros and wouldnt trade them in for anything different. both provide clean, sharp shots throughout the focal range. the AF is super fast and accurate. we've had A3 prints made up from a shot taken with this lens and a 20D and have been razor sharp and a shot from the same combo has just been printed in horse and hound..
overall its an excellent competitor for the canon variant at a fraction of the price..
I was looking at getting the AFS 70-200f2.8vr2 to replace my 80-200f2.8 but there are other things that that money could do Ring light+F6+scanner so saving some dosh would be great. I would really like to pit this lens against the vr1,vr2 and 80-200 to SEE the difference for myself.
Have HSM. I have the EX DG macro (the first version), and that definitely have HSM, I'm pretty sure the 'EX DG" also has HSM, and some people think it's sharper than the two 'macro' variants. Not sure about the original one, but it would surprise me if it didn't have HSM!
