How is this shot created?

Hello, hope this is the correct section.

I've just seen this photo and was wondering how it was created?

At a guess (I'm not good with photoshop) maybe they took a few shots of the model moving into postion on a slow exposure, then another at a faster exposure and blended them together via layers, making the motion ones of less opacity (if thats the right word).

As in they just took a say 2-3 second exposure and had the model stand still for the last second?

Maybe I was over-thinking it.

Reckon that is all PP to me.
With movement you don't get straight lines, and all the blur is horizontal.
And only part of the photo is blurred, no face blur, leg blur or hair blur.

Anyone care to elaborate a bit more on how to produce the technique, as I say not a photoshop person really, I just use it for tweaking my RAW's on import.

I think that looks more like flash/focus dragging.

Can you explain how to do this and leave her face as sharp as it is?

I think its all manufactured too, it would be complicated (not impossible) but complicated to shoot in one take with movement from opposing directions.
Peeps have no time to work with cameras these days, they'd rather sit on their arses and make things up with pS & puters...

And your point is what?:shake:

And my point is to answer the OP's question which was, and I quote.."I've just seen this photo and was wondering how it was created?".

The point being peeps are less inclined to shoot the picture with a camera and more likely to create it with software these days, regardless of the difficulty.
I make no apology for being completely unimpressed by three sweeps of a blur brush in PS..

.....and good for you!! I, well, I like to judge an image on whether I like it or not, whether it is composed well, whether it is pleasing to the eye etc. Ho hum, each to their own I guess.

OP, it's is simple motion blur, and a nice effect can be created using it cleverly. Obviously, even if used well and creatively will still mean it is pants to some purely cos it wasn't shot 'in camera' or created with toxic chemicals.

Sometimes I despair........

not sure this is done in camera because of the lines as suggested but you could do it in camera and get a sharp face by using flash at the end of the exposure to freeze the motion at the end.

I think I should of said shutter dragging, I tend to know it as flash dragging because it seem to work best with flash, you can google it but heres a short explenation:
Have model stand in position
select a low shutter speed 1/30 etc
fire a shot then before the shutter closes move the camera the way the you want the `blur` to appear
may take lots of goes to get it right but you can produce some interesting effects
you can also do the same thing using the zoom

It's an interesting techinique, which I think would take a lot of mastering. However, with the picture posted, I think it has to be all PP, as the motion is in 2 different directions and there is only blur on certain parts of the shot.

Don't, just carry on liking whatever you like, feel free to express your opinion, just don't be so quick to dismiss opinions that differ from your own.
I like photographs, I don't like manipulated pictures, so what's to despair about so early in your TPF membership...??

out of curiosity, what happens when you see a photo you like and then you discover afterwards that it was heavily photoshopped? do you change your mind and suddenly dislike it?

So from that statement , I can only deduce you don't like photographs with flash, blurred DOF, fisheye lenses etc. Surely these are all forms of manipulation.

Easy folks!

Just looked up this thread again, I spoke to her and she said it was just motion blur, so well done to those who guessed correcrtly, no prizes sorry though :(

I will give it a try myself sometime, something new to try :)

Peace & love

...i am free to despair all i like however long my membership has been aren't i?

Do you seriously believe that photographs haven't been manipulated since the day they were created? That most of the greats didn't manipulate virtually all of their images in some way shape or form? I mean....really???

Oh and i am not sure that i dismissed anyones opinion did I? I merely voiced my despair at some that's all.

also i just noticed your comment on this thread:

is selective colouring not manipulation of images?

Its nothing to live or die by, its just another opinion to consider, whether you agree or not.

Its quite interesting this discussion. You are of course entitled to your opinion. That is not in question. But if you voice your opinion, it is expected that it might make some sense. In order to validate that opinion, i think a number of us are trying to UNDERSTAND your points.

You don't like image manipulation. What does that mean? It would appear that it means you don't like motion blur or HDR. However, do you really mean HDR? Or do you mean the overdone HDR images that were all the rage a few years ago? Some HDR images are VERY subtle and you wouldn't know. Do you mean them too?

How far do your views on manipulation go? Cropping is a form of manipulation, as is level tweaks and saturation etc. Do you dislike these things too?

Does it make a difference whether someone uses a bit of smoked glass on the front of their lens rather than photoshop? If so, why? Is cross processing using different chemicals and film alright or is that manipulation that is unacceptable?

I for one am fed up with people who make sweeping statements about photoshop and then are unable to back up their comments and opinions with anything that makes any sense.

Of course, this is only my opinion but i do try to make it clear and back it up when asked. :bang:

I personally don't like the image in question, but because I don;t think it has been done very well(not that I could do better!).

I also think its a PP constructed blur....All very parallel, I cant naturally see the starting point of her movements ...unless she was in a very peculiar position.

Can you explain how to do this and leave her face as sharp as it is?

As another answer...
One could use rear sync flash, as in ...Open shutter, movement blur, flash to freeze final position, close shutter.

Like this.

.. I’ve also utilised the pre-flash light to highlight the blur, during the movement stage.

Thanks Adam,

Like your shot BTW.

I did origionally ask these with my tongue firmly in my cheek, as I don't think it is possible to recreate the origional shot in camera. The blur is all wrong for movement, and the face does not show any.

In your example you can see the other arm shadowed across his body, and most obviously the ghosting of the wheel.

Thanks for sticking up the shot, It shows good technique.

I'd hoped that any critique posts I made containing the words "codhead" and "cack" twice, would not be taken entirely seriously..:)
If you're looking for me loarding it large style over some hideous HDR, don't waste your time, it doesn't exist.

hdr in general or just overdone HDR? I'm curious as to whether you would even know if some images are hdr - or do you automatically dislike any HDR because at the end of the day, it is image manipulation on the computer
