Yes
After alot of research, and being offered my first sort of commercial job, (photographing a bar in a hotel outside England !!!) ive decided I really need to upgrade my gear, to a point.

Im after a D300(s) not sure if I need the S model however. My D70 has 5 af points iirc, and when i used my 70-300mm to take this shot :

It was hunting all over the place trying to find the plane, to the point where i missed around 10 seconds of shooting. I really need quicker AF.

I also need better iso performance, i took some shots in truro at night the other day and they were blurry, so i turned the iso up and shutter speed up to combat that....all photos ruined by noise :(

Im also after Tokina 11-16 F2.8, Tokina 16-50 F2.8, and Zeiss 100mm F2 Makro Planar. And eventually Nikon 200mm F2 VR.

No idea how much i need to buy these all 2nd hand however ? I have highlited what im after. THis isnt a wanted post btw.

Recommended 2nd hand retailers are

Mifsuds, Ffordes, Park Camera's, Camtech, MPB, London Camera Exchange, TP Sales Forum

Avoid eBay as you have no real proof of the history of the lens and the above retailers will give you 3-6 months warranties on their lenses. Also you'll be able to price up camera bodies.

Personally, if you are doing alot of indoor photography, the D700 would be a better choice, the D300 ISO performance isn't that good.

You should be looking at £650 to £750 for a second hand D300, depending on condition and actuation's.

So same price as a new D90 then...hmm

Well yes, however if your looking to do commercial work, the D300 does come under Nikon's pro line up, as opposed to the D90 on their consumer line up, if you turned up at a job with a D90 i'm not sure how that would be perceived by some, on the other hand the D300 does look like a pro camera particularly with the grip attached ;)

I don't have a problem with ebay if you're sensible with buying.
Most of my recent purchases have been from there and so far with no major problems (a focussing screen described as unused turned out to be well-scruffy, but it was only £9.00 and it would have cost more than that to post it back to him from here in Germany).

Research carefully. Look at the seller's previous form and look at what similar items have sold for, both on ebay and in bigger shops dealing in 2nd-hand.
Ask questions of a technical nature which will tell you about the seller's relationship to the item he's selling.
Pick a price beyond which you are not prepared to budge and stick to it. Maximum Bid means just that. Another one will be along soon enough.

I too prefer buying from TP members, but even that doesn't always work out...

If you had not already seen it there is a D300 in the classifieds at the moment that is at a sensible price
