I just had a look and it turns out I joined here a year ago yesterday. In that time, my photography has improved beyond all belief. Not everything I've learned in that time has been directly on TP, but links to other sites, PMs to/from knowledgeable members and really useful crit has formed 90% of it I'd say. It's weird because although this seems to be the most popular forum, it took me over 2 months to find it.

What about everyone else? Were you originally a fully auto shooter who now shoots nothing but manual, were you a P&Ser when you joined who's now turned pro, or were you already an established pro who joined and passed on your knowledge to those just setting out?

What has TP done for you?

Naff all mate!
Just when I think I have it all sussed, some clever tog tells me I have'nt! Then I have to start all over! Dammed annoying don't ya know!! :(

Nah, its a great forum with some of the best people on the net. My pics have'nt got any better, but I know what I am doing wrong now! but thats me, stuck in my ways.
One day it will all click (pun intended!) then everyone on here can say 'told you so' :D

Well, I have been without use of my camera for a bit, and i seem to have been using my old powershot (recently with CHDK) alone. I need to get some new batteries but buying those is going to have to wait a while. This sort of makes me unwilling to want to post my pictures as I don't deem my photos with this camera any good and thus not being good enough.

I have learned a lot from here that i didn't know or understand previously having never taken a course or read a photography book and just playing with the settings.

TP hasn't improved my photographs very much but it's certainly helped empty my wallet!

I thinks its helped in some regards, but getting out and about and playing and links to other sites have also helped, iv learnt alot, but still have more than i could ever imagine to learn some of this will come with new gear (ie new flash etc) i hope to be around for a while

I have met some nice people and had some fun but its really hard to get decent crit on a photo! If that improved then I could say that TP has helped my photography!

It has certainly helped me choose gear and become more knowledgable about certain things.. and I havent been here long :p

couldnt agree more lol

I joined up here a couple of days after getting my DSLR for Christmas. Since then my photography has improved loads, I haven't been asking loads of questions, more looking at people's photos and reading how they should improve them. I find I can apply a lot of that advice to my practice and things start to improve significantly.

Before joining here I have always shot with fairly basic P&S compact cameras so I had a rough idea of good composition but never the image quality to back it up.

It's got me out there and inspired. It's also given me the technique. However I haven't posted as many as I prob could have as I tended to be more of a lurker and admiring the photo's posted and picked up as much as I could.

I'm looking to change that though and get involved a lot more

It's helped me out immensely.
Shooting techniques, tutorials on editing......
Gear reviews, C&C, the list goes on!

Not only that, I have some VERY good pals, met here who I wouldn't other wise know. So personally, I can't thanks TP enough

I have been into photography for years, all stemming back from my dad. I only found TP a few weeks ago when i got back into Togging after not taking any pics for a few years.

Since i have been here, its helped me understand the process of things better and also my own style. I have learnt a great deal sometimes just reading other posts, even when they are nothing to do with what i do.

Its a great place, and very informative, although from the pictures i have seen of its members its full of geeks.... :D

Did i just say that out loud.!

TP has probably improved my photography a bit, sadly, it's also made me more aware of the shortcomings too - I think my first post was a hopelessly optimistic posting in Landscapes & Scenery 2 days after buying my 450D, where my shot was taken to pieces in a very friendly and cheerful way. It took me about 6 months to actually have the nerve to post another shot, which was again ripped to bits. Now I take far more photo's - work a lot harder at getting them right, and don't think any of them are worth bothering posting.

I do enjoy (mostly) the POTY competition however, as people are pretty much barred from ripping into your shots.

And the best thing I've ever done for improving my photography, a Photo-365, was pretty much inspired by people on here trying them. For that i'm extremely grateful.

I think there are 2 main reasons for my improvement over the last couple of years, joining TP and joining my local camera club. I think being able to discuss and compare your work with other photographers is vital to being able to improve and push yourself. TP has particularly given me the confidence and knowledge to invest in better equipment and the right kind of equipment that I actually use for the kind of photography I do.

Where do I start :-

  • Advice on equipment
  • Information on techniques
  • Inspiration from others pictures...
  • General encouragement
A nice community of people

what else can you say....A pleasure to be here.
