How much of a disadvantage is it staying with Nikon?

The D7k is the only video capable nikon you should consider. All the rest either don't have manual controls in video or use rubbish compression (motion jpeg). The D7ks compression is actually much better than the canons as it uses B-frame compression to nearly half the bit rates. This means you get much more video on your pc and memory cards and also makes editing much easier. Considering you are shooting for the web this is a massive consideration
 
since I used to own a 5D2 and shoot night clubs I feel it is not a ridiculous statment.

Nikon and 1D series are all around the middle which makes for a horride viewfinder.

maybe you just never knew what to focus on ;)

shot motorsport with my old 5D2 and had no problems on any focus point
 
are we still talking about video or stills? i think you will find it shooting video is very different then stills in some ways. Stills you just set everything and lock the focus then shoot, if photo is bad you can always take again .....

Personally i find it shooting video improve my photography skills alot because everything is done in manual and think about how i want the shot to be done then practice to make sure the technical bits is all spot on, i.e zoom, focus etc.

I'm still here, others are debating my original, incendary comment about the 5D2 :lol:

One of the major problems with the internet age is fewer and fewer shops actually stock a full range, say a D7000, D300s and D3s to actually test side-by-side. I did have a bit of a play at Focus 2011 but didn't properly look at video functions because at the time, it wasn't a major consideration. Now it.

I currently film with some Sony cameras but these are so far removed from DSLRs that there is no comparision really. They're good, but they don't have the creative possibilities of really wide angle lenses or long telephotos, and you can't do true macro or shallow DoF stuff with them. Plus, it'd be another item of kit to lug around, which in some cases for me (i.e. being on a boat on a trout reservoir) would be a pain in the bum.
 
yeah DSLR is great for video because the lens. with adapter these days you can mount lots of top notch lens on for cheap, thats why i went on and buy tons of nikon AI lens to use on both video and stills lol.

anamorphic lens is something i want to buy and try after using my workmates GH1 + 50 Prime f1.4 and Anamorphic lens. The wide screen outcome is so good that it lead you to another level of creativity :)

I had one when they first came out any high contrast focus situations and it would not focus, an example was a family of ducks on running water in bright sunlight with the 70-200 2.8 lens it would not focus just hunted all the time also when shooting dance scenes at weddings it hated the disco lights and again would not focus

Thanks to the likes of Wilky and POAH for taking a serious thread into the schoolyard.

To others, those of you who do video on DSLRs, what kind of data amounts are you encountering..... 8gb for 30mins, something like that? I take it memory cards have to have to be a minimum spec, say 60mbs?
 
If your actually serious about shooting video then pick up a red scarlet with an eos mount, it'll pay for itself in no time. Nikon mounts should be available soon.

I am serious but red is bot what I need How much are we talking? Thousands? Not a viable option in reality, especially as I need lightweight.... we'd also lose more money than we'd make buying kit like that.

So about 8.5k for everything you'll need, its more lightweight than a DSLR tbh. Much better range of video options, and it'll output real 1080p rather than this wishywashy **** you get off DSLR's.

If you're doing serious stuff it shouldnt take you 4/5 jobs before you've made your money back for it, you could even hire it out tbh.
 
SamP - looks amazing but just wouldn't be a viable option. The video ill be doing are inhouse DVDs and web featurettes so things have to be more cost effective and ultimately, I still need a dslr for stills, hence wanting one with video built in.

Well one option which means keeping your current kit is to have a look at the Sony NEX 5n - virtually no extra weight to carry and awesome video capability. Check out some of the the Youtube videos taken with this camera. The NEX7 should be an even better bet still, but launch is now delayed indefinitely due to the Thailand floods.

What's puzzling me, Pat is that if your work are paying for the kit I assume they are VAT registered and the gear will be tax deductible, so it seems madness for them not to just buy/lease a D3s for you and be done with it :shrug:

That is the exact plan of attack I have lined up for Monday morning. After vat we're talking £2900 for a d3s and I have a cunning plan including some old 400D and 20D bodies that may get them to buy me one....;)

Then again graham, my company work in mysterious ways at times but I can ask and see where that gets me .....
