At nearly 30 years old, what is it that makes it so expensive. The rarity, the image quality or both? Are the lenses of old actually a better breed than what we are getting in this digital age?

Jeezo, thats mucho wonga. I'd expect to go out on its own and take perfect images for that much.

The Noct Nikkor 58mm f/1.2 is a lens designed to produce high quality images even at its maximum f/1.2 aperture. On a typical night shot where there may be, for example small points of light, then this lens will reproduce the image as sharp points rather than as a slight blur which you would probably get shooting with a normal 50mm f/1.2 at maximum aperture. This was a specialist lens, and indeed very, very expensive.
