How much should I pay for used Nikon?

Hi,

I'm looking at buying a used Nikon D50 or D70s or D80.
Shortlisted these as they have an inbuilt motor in the body.

Looking on Ebay - where else should I be looking?

Which one would you recommend a complete beginner should go for?
&
How much should I be paying (roughly) for a decent example.

If I was to go for body only what general lens should I get to start off with for:
- Portraits
- Landscapes
- Sports

Depends on your budget, you won't find one lens that will do all three well, but a jack-of-all-trades would be something like an 18-200mm.

As I say, it depends on what you want to spend - for around £80 more than the price of just the Nikon lens you could have the Sigma and a D80 body from MPB....

The Nikon 18-200 has VR as the Siggie 18-200 you quoted doesn't.... Hence the Nikon price tag to match....

I'd say the majority would recommend the Nikon 18-200 VR...But all depends on the funds available...

Went for under £150 delivered....

The Nikon 18-200 is expensive, you would be better off with an 18-70 and a 55-200 VR and could be had for less than the 18-200.
 
I bought a D70s as a backup body earlier this year for around £160 from the famous auction site. It's a decent DSLR for starting with.

I've got the Sigma 18-200, but the version with OS (Sigma's version of VR). It's not bad as an all-rounder (some reviews put it slightly ahead of the Nikkor equivalent), but you'd get better IQ for the same amount of money (£200 max) with the 18-70 + 55-200 VR (I'm talking second hand here). It just depends if you mind swapping lenses...

Any of the cameras in your poll will do the job and all are decent enough. The only real disadvantages of the D70s or D50 are poorer high iso performance (not that the D80 is all that great) and the tiny rear LCD, that and the fact that any of these cameras will be a few years old now, so on a purely age-related basis the D80 is better, being the most modern.

To throw another spanner in the works, a D200 can be had for not much more than a D80....:naughty:
 
I kept my old D70 (no s) when I got my D700. OK, it's only 6.1 MP but gives decent prints up to A3 and I like thge feel of it.

Lenses for it? Well, I only got rid of the 18-70 kit lens that came with it because I sold a D200 and the buyer needed a lens to get him started and being a Dx lens, it wasn't an ideal match for the D700 (yes, it would fit and work but would only give 5MP in Dx mode) and I have a selection of Fx lenses from 12mm up to 500 anyway.

ETA.. Where to buy? And where to get an idea as to prices?

Completed sales on e-bay will tell you what people have got there and a look in the back of Amateur Photographer will show you a few 2nd hand dealers' prices and inform you as to their warranty lengths.
