Yes
After ordering my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 I decided I needed an 82mm CPL filter for it and set about finding the best deal and being a cheapskate I commited to buying one off ebay for £8. Now before all you purists point out you get what you pay for may I say Bolllllox, I have already CPL filters of varying price ranges and have never noticed any difference (granted I'm getting on bit) between them. But during my search for the best price I came across this little gem http://www.harpersphoto.co.uk/product/tiffen_82mm_digital_ht_circular_polarizing_filter/ Where do the get that price from? Do people actually buy them? Could you give me their address as I May have a few bargains for them.

Cheers Paul

Ask a pro, they wont be using £8 filters but then again I don't know anyone who would pay £400 for one.
I use the Hoya Pro 1 series and I'm happy paying £50-70 for them.
The coating also used on filters varies makes a difference.

I think the phrase " You get what you pay for" comes to mind with the £8 filter, however I wouldn't pay nor would I need a £400 CPL at my level of photography.

So what price would you pay for a quality 82mm CPL filter?

just bought 72mm Marumi DHG Protector and DHG C.PL - both slimline - very impressed

so "here" yer go....£69

I was just wondering if there is a certain amount of "snobbery* going on here in the way that no WAG is going to be seen in South Africa without some Gucci handbag costing £3000 or £4000 when one from Matalan costing say £10 ( I may be a mile out with my prices but I'm not clued up on handbags) would perform exactly the same purpose ie. carrying lippy, moby and purse as the Gucci.

no snobbery about it, why put a £8 bit of glass in front of a £500+ bit of glass? stands to reason the cheap filter wont have the coatings the more expensive ones do.

but yes 400 for a filter is a little OTT in my opinion.. lol

:agree: why spend all that money on a quality lens then stick a cheap bit of glass in front of it? No snobbery at all, I just don't get it.

My point is that I have bought cheap CPL filters inthe past and have found them to do a great job (to my eyes) I know someone will come on and point out that my eyes cannot anallyse the performance of the filter like some machine costing millions, but if I find it not up to the job. what have I lost? £8? Certainly not £400 for which you can buy some very good lenses not just a throw away filter.

this really all boils down to "your" expectations... 3 solutions appear to be -

1...economy filter = possible image degradation, flares -- if you're not bothered by the "possibility" - spend as little as you want

2...do some research. - checkout "lenstip.com" lab tests
Hoya came high in UV filters
Marumi came high in C.PL ........hence me buying same

3...go for the best manufactured quality
Hoya HD series
B+W [whatever] series
Marumi Super DHG
in the belief that these manufacturers provide the best

ultimately your choice.....:D

There was an article a while back on some Amercian blue-ray player for $3k - dissassembled it turned out to be *exactly* the same inside as a $700 player.

Anyway, how about considering how much each element within the lens in question can be 'worth'? Take 24-70 F2.8L - £950, 16 elements, plus the case and motor etc. £50 an element, £50 for a filter then?

Well, at least somebody's keeping all those kids in the Far East at work - filing down the bottoms of Coke bottles.

It is very strange ... back in the 60's when coated filters were rare I use Tiffin filters on my Rollies... in those days they were much the same price as any others, in fact rather less than Rollies own make.

£400 for that Tiffen looks like a typo - it's £200 everywhere else.

Tiffen cost a bit more because they're American made, and you've got to keep them in burgers, but their HT range are good.

Hoya 82mm HD polariser isn't much less than £200.

I was given a cheap cpl filter. It was always producing green shots. It went in the bin.

I know someone who fixes CD players..

Had a broke bang & olufsen CD player costing thousands.

took it to bits and was full of Philips internal cd playing stuff lol

thats pretty common, sometimes its cheaper and easier to buy an off the shelf processing unit.

however the Amercian blue-ray player for $3k mentioned was LITTERALLY an identical chassis and internals just slotted into an aluminium case. i'll try and find the URL..
