I have a wedding in Ireland next weekend and I am spending the afternoon cleaning lenses, sensors etc and getting all my kit ready. I have now realised that I have a problem in that I am not sure how to get all the gear to Ireland whilst keeping the valuable stuff as carry on luggage. I have a Lowepro rucksack which isn't big enough and the camera bodies sit a bit proud on this one, I also have the Tamrac Adventure 8x but it is too big (I've checked the dimensions for Ryanair).

Quick snap of the kit taken with my phone:

There is another lens (Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8) to added to the list and I haven't included a lot of the smaller stuff such as batteries, further gels, monopod, chargers etc etc. Obviously some of the less vital stuff can go in the hold such as spare flashes, stands and the like but can anyone recommend a carry on case that will fit my needs? The maximum dimensions are 55cm x 40cm x 20cm should weigh no more than 10kg.

Not an answer to your bag question, but have you considered the alternative?

Go by car and take the ferry - problem solved:thumbs:

i had same question a little while ago on here for my portable studio kit, i ended up getting a 1 meter long padded black holdall (its massive) previously used for transporting ice hockey sticks/kit, will show item so you can view , be back soon

Violin case for the flashes/PWs etc? You can carry those on in addition to your normal hand luggage - you'd be screwed if they asked you for a quick tune though

£40.00 and its padded

my camera bag is full size 1, so you can judge the size of the holdall...

Flash guns PW's and lighting stands etc in suitcase in hold. Place the Flash Guns PW's etc in the middle of the case so that you cloths protect them . Also use a hard shell case rather than a soft one. Cameras. lenses etc into hand luggage. You may need to buy a new bag. Check out the Think Tank range, not cheap though.

You might want to check out Scot Kelby's blog. He's just got a new Think Tank bag and he seems to get a hell of a lot of kit in it. However I'm not sure it's OK for Ryanair as they seem to have different baggage requirements to BAA

Personally. I'd drive. Bit of a pain but at least you will know all your kit is with you. Bet you've already paid for your flight though.

Can you use the Nikon CLS and leave the PW's? If not then splitting it is the best bet. Those little PW's are fairly robust and a tupperware box with bubble wrap in it in the suitcase would do the trick. Another one for the flashes. All the batteries and odds and sods can go in the case too. That leaves the bodies and lenses to go in one bag that you should be able to carry on.

Then you just need to figure out how you are going to carry it all once you get over there!

For which I'd put a collapsable backpack (just an ordinary one) folded down in the suitcase which you can transfer the tupperware box and all your batteries etc into once you are settled in.

Oh and don't try to pack any clothes, you won't have room. :)

Hope you have a fab trip once you get yourself sorted. :)

I have one of these,

Does it have to go throught one of these rectangular slot test thingies?

This is the same one I use too, it's perfect for my kit and carries just about all I need including my 17" MacBook Pro. Have travelled with it without any hiccups; however never used Ryanair, so I can't comment on their regulations. The dimensions are a bit over what they seem to permit.

For the bigger stuff, I use a Samsonite hard-shell case, in which I put my clothes wrapped over any of my gear (tripod, monopod, etc.).

Thanks for all the suggestions, at least I've got a week to get it sorted!

Driving is the best option

Not an option in this case as I have a late wedding on the Saturday and the flight is Sunday morning (already booked as is the hire car.

Cheers Ali, I think that will be the best bet. I may get a slightly bigger rucksack for bodies and lenses etc.

I've got a Lowepro Commercial - it'd take that lot except the light stands and fits as standard hand baggage. Your setup looks pretty close to mine. Linky to information here but they're out of stock, so you'll have to hunt

enjoy the trip - I don't envy you with Ryan air though

Hugh

Thanks Hugh, I have one of those in the loft but thought it would be too big, the dimensions shown are 48.5x32x23cm so its only 3cm over on one side. I'll go and check that now.

Cheers!

Yep, the depth of the case is 20cm it's the straps that take up the other 6cm but I recon you could squeeze it through. It would certainly take all the gear except the stands.

isn't that what the 2nd tog is for? - mule!
certainly carry the tripds, flashes, low-risk stuff

The Lowepro Commercial might just do it, its slightly over but not by much particularly if I remove the sie pockets.

Unfortunately he's got his own gear and probably having the same problems! All the low risk gear (spare flashes, stands, Ezybox, reflectors, etc) is going in the hold but I need to carry everything I can't afford to lose to get the job done.

I'll carry it!

The position is already filled! :D

I use ryan scare quite a lot
never had hand baggage weighted or even size checked
and some people do take the ****
I saw one woman with 3 children and 5 carry-on bags each the size of a small person
not a peep out of anyone (except the kids who screamed the whole time)

Does your assistant need a assistant..:D I could be your man

You could consider a courier like this. My mates company use them for sending out laptops but it could work for you.

They use a special box which is padded and basically what happens is they come to you with the box, they open the box, you put your stuff in then they seal it with zip locks. If you did this the day before then by the time you got there the next day you could accept delivery yourself and check the zip lock seals.

I know most couriers are rubbish and I normally wouldnt consider a courier for any of my gear but I have used these a couple of times and my mate has used them for 6 months and not a single parcel lost, damaged or tampered. Im sure if you spoke to them then they might have a bigger box to use to get loads of gear, but as standard they are for laptops and each box would take a few lenses your flashes and your PW leaving the tripods to go in the hold and the bodies to go with you.

Hope this helps

a burton zoom pro should easily fit all that. I regularly fly with a similar amout of kit:

4 or 5 speedlights will fit in the top pouch in their cases too. I tend to put them in a different padded case in my checked luggage though.

Thanks ruvor, I must admit I've never heard of that brand but it does look very interesting.

Alternatively Colin let me look after some of your kit whilst you're in Ireland!!!

Thanks ruvor, I must admit I've never heard of that brand but it does look very interesting.

Burton is a brand of Snowboarding equipment. They make boards, boots and bindings but also do bags, clothing and other stuff for snowboarders...

Oh and some stuff for photographers (it's mainly kit built to be taken snowboarding, but there's no reason it couldn't be used for normally carrying stuff).

Thats gotta be sort on the back with all that gear.
I have a d3 plus a 24-70,70-200 and one flash gun plus my macbook and my back killed.
Would hate to have to carry all that....
Good luck mate.

I use a ThinkTank Airport Acceleration for flying Colin. My review is here

Not cheap but designed to fit hand luggage requirements, be light and hold as much kit as possible in the shape.
