How to check if my Nikon is under warraty?

Well you need a receipt, I think, for warranty.

But you can make an account at Nikon and it will let you input your serial number in, not sure on what details it can tell you though.

Did you buy it new?
Was it more than a year ago?
Did you get an extended warranty to go beyond the standard 1-year?
(Nikon warranties are not transferable).

Ah! That answered my question really, I bought it second hand so it wouldn't be covered any way, oh well never mind I will post another question to see if any one knows how to fix a very dark viewfinder? Live view is fine and using a fully charged battery.

Chris, did you buy it from a shop, or someone you know?
How long have you had it?

I bought it off the infamous auction site. Everything works well apart from the viewfinder. It's the D5000 in very good physical condition and I got it for a very good price just a real pity about the viewfinder, I would like to fix it if at all possible but I'm not about to go throwing loads of money at it.

Ah ok, I just wondered because if it was a friend, they could maybe have made a warranty claim on your behalf.

Have you had it too long to return to the seller?

Normally like this:

If it still works - still under warranty.

If it's broken - warranty expired.

Steve.
