How to email HIGH quality images without compression *sports shooters*

Hi,
Im a sports tog (student), and everytime i email images to a client, they are displayed low quality, and sometimes unusable - does anybody know a way around this, SPORTS SHOOTERS how do you send other than ftp?

Its pretty simple if you have it set up in the right way Mark :)

From what i have seen the standard setup is using Photomechanic and Photoshop.

You crop and resize the image in Photoshop (the requirements will be different for each agency) for the two agencies i shoot for they want the files to be roughly 1MB each and a resolution of 300DPI. Each image is saved in Photoshop. You then open the same image in Photomechanic, right click, choose send via email and then check the file size and DPI again to make sure it is correct. If you set it up in the preferences then Photomechanic will automatically open your email program (Mac Mail or Outlook) and send for you. Job done :D
 
How do you send them at the moment (which email service)? I've never had any issues with sending large files via email so wonder if it is, a) your email provider or b) the client downloading the "preview" photo not the actual file.
 
Exactly how are you emailing them?

It may be that your email software/service is altering the photos, or your customer's email service is altering them.

To prevent that, try zipping them up, and send the zip file.

Personally, I upload them to my own server, and email the links to customers.

I doubt if this will work when you are emailing to picture desks, my understanding is that images are stripped automatically from the email so sending an email with a link will be ignored.
 
Im using google mail/ windows live and both seem to do the same although google claims to be good at sending images :gag: Im trying a programme called "mediashare" where I can give my client a user and password, and they just simply download the images they want, might work for when I shoot the football, any opinions would be appreciated.

EDIT: It wants me too pay = NOT HAPPENING!
 
I had to go back to my 'old-style' yahoo mail account for this very reason...the newer ones with 'easy' photo attachment software caused massive compression if you forgot to upload and then click 'original size' next to the file options - which almost doubled the time it took to attach the images.
With the old 'attach file' option, you just upload the file as is.
I can attach up to 20Mb per email, so five hi-res images are no problem at all, considering you only need to send about 2-2.5Mb files for most newspapers and magazines (I re-size to 12" along the long side of the image at 150dpi for transmission to news organisations).
If a specific publication requires higher-res images then send one image per attachment. It doesn't take that much longer.
 
ahhh right, Im talking sending 12-30 High quality images (sometimes more) at once.

yeah that's about right...

If you're an agency-tog they'll have supplied the necessary FTP uploader as part of the IT pack you get.
Then it's just drag and drop after you've appended all the required file-info.
 
And if your not an agency tog ....Yet ;)....Im working freelance for Preston North End FC (to gain a bit of experience)
 
I use ftp and outlook to wire from pitchside, occasionally POP3 can screw up and not deliver even though your email client reports that its sent successfully so i send using my email client but hook it up to a 100% reliable outgoing server http://www.authsmtp.com, i use the £30 a year package which allows 300mb a month transfer which is plenty given i only use it pitchside sending approx 8-10 images per game at 500k in size each, of course i still ftp the same files and send a seperate email with the ftp links as a back up

at home i use windows mail and send anything up to 100 high res images at a time depending on where theyre going and the end user email restrictions.
 
The best way for a individual freelance sports photographer to distribute their pictures quickly is to upload your pictures to Photoshelter and then use their bulk FTP system to distribute the pictures all at the same time. I have been using this system from the pitch side for 3 years. Forget email many Sunday newspapers do not have time to open them.
