how to get more magnification from a Sigma 50mm f2.8 macro? ?

Hello, wonder if you can help me.

I recently bought a Sigma 50mm f2.8 DG macro lens, and it's great for flowers, but I'd like to get greater than 1:1 magnification, so I can shoot some insects, such as ants.

The more I read, the more confused I'm getting. Do I need a teleconverter, extension tubes, a reversing ring, or a combination of all three?

Or would I be better of getting hold of a longer macro lens, say a 150mm? I'm pretty sure the longer lens option won't give me more magnification, only a greater working distance.

Would any macro experts be so kind as to offer me some help?

Many thanks in advance.

Indeed the 150 would only increase your working distance, not the magnification - I have used both tubes and a 1.4xtc with my 105 macro to increase the mag beyond 1:1, both options work (though I prefer using tubes) and can be used together. Be warned once you get past 1:1 the DOF becomes very thin!

I use extention tubes

:agree: A set of Kenkos is the obvious answer. Retains full auto operation, £120.

But if you're serious about macro beyond 1:1, which is not easy however you go about it, then sooner or later you'll end up wanting the Canon MP-E 65mm and a ring-flash.
