how to go wireless with sb900 flashgun

At a guess a d700.
Without wanting to be an arse - I would honestly read the manual (both for cam and SB). That should be sufficient to set up the sb as a remote with the pop-up acting as commander on the D700. If you are wanting to do anything more complex then you might need additional kit.
 
The D700 can act as the "commander" using the inbuilt flash, alternatively buy the Su-800 or some pocket wizards.

Really depends on how much control you want from behind the camera.
 
thanks for the replys - yeap its a d700 and as i know i should get my sel a pocket wizard (are these handy to work and set up when doing a wedding ) i also have a sb 800 but i want all off camera flash, (no popup) i knew that the pop up flash would trigger it but then i dont want a harsh horrible front flash in my pics. if i didnt need the pocket wizard then i prob wouldnt get one, is there ne other way without? and with out triggering it with on camera flashes? im guessing no !!! ... have i just answered my question lol

you can set the pop up to -- which will essentially just fire the SB's (you will see a catch light but very little light will be emitted).
 
I don't know the specifics for the D700 but it'll be in the flash section of Custom Settings, probably under 'Flash Cntrl for Built-in-flash'. Select Commander Mode and look at the options there.
 
As mentioned, under flash control. I have that option set up in a "my menu" on my d300. Nice and accessible from there.
 
If you're going to use CLS for triggering your remote flash, you'll need to make sure that your pop-up flash (or SU-800) is in line of sight with the sensor on your SB, otherwise the SB will not pick up the signal to fire.

CLS is a very clever and easy to set-up. Use the manual to see what setting you need to do with your D700 and both SB900 & SB800. Once you've got the basics, have a search on YouTube where you'll find loads of stuff on CLS and how to use it in its' various modes.

As I've said, it's very easy to set-up and master. The trick is learning how much flash power to use at a given environment, only practice will resolve that.
