How to photograph kingfishers?

I know a few of you on here are pretty keen on your kingfishers and I've seen some excellent photo's in the Birds section so was hoping for some advice.

I've come on holiday to Devon to a cottage with about a half mile stretch of river to fish on. Jokingly before we came I said I'd love to photograph a kingfisher whilst I was here and coincidently on our first walk along the river bank we saw the unmistakable blue of a kingfisher as it darted downstream - only the third occasion I've been privileged enough to see a kingfisher. My mission for the holiday: to get a photograph of it!

I walked the stretch of river we have access over in the hope of identifying a few perches and ideally a nest site. No luck with the latter but found a few possible branches in and overhanging the water from where a kingfisher could catch fish but i'm yet to spend anytime actually just sitting and watching. Are there any helpful tips in identifying perching posts from the number of other sticks which look no different?

Is there any other advice even remotely related to help me on my mission?

I'm a little limited on lenses but I can only work with what I have; a Nikon 300mm F4 with the option of a 1.4x TC should more reach be provided. I'm a bit hesitant using the TC due to the impact on the AF speed and the already low light levels around the wooded stretch of river.

I have a feeling this is going to take more patience than I have and a little more luck than I deserve!

Edit - Done a little more reading and see they are protected from disturbance at and around the nest...I will proceed with caution. The welfare of the subject always comes before the photograph!

Ditto. I've covered a 4 or 5 mile stretch of river in the past 4 weeks and it's driving me nuts, every so often there's this flash of blue and "eeeep" that whizzes past, but no sign of where he hunts.
