How to treat aluminum rust (white powder)

Hi guys.

I've managed to pick up a manfrotto tripod cheap but it has some paint peeling & ally rust on the leg clamps.

I need to neutralise this before re-painting but searching google all the answer tend to offer US solutions with products we just don't have over in the UK.

Does anyone have any experience or advice how to solve this issue.

Rub it down to the bare metal and then paint
 
Use isolater/barrier primer first. Then paint over that.
 
You need an etch primer, rather than a regular car-paint type one, otherwise it won't bond with the aluminium and it'll either flake or moisture will get under it and the corrosion will reappear.

Etching primer is your friend and a must. We used it on aluminium car bodies on classic cars.
 
Halfords Acid 8 etching spray about £12 a tin .rub the powder off first .

The clamps are rusting? I am fighting exactly that (bloody cheapskates Manfrotto - the legs itself are absolutely fine!). I didn't etch mine, just sanded it down and sprayed some black metallic paint. 3 months in and still functional. Next time I will probably give it paintstripper and some acid treatment (dilute HCl should suffice) to save myself the hassle with sandpaper.
