How to upgrade firmware.

Firstly I would like to apologise for this extremely basic question.

I have a Nikon D700, how do I know when the firmware needs updating and how do I it?

Latest firmware is 1.02 - Menu > Tools (spanner) > Firmware Ver will tell you what yours is.
