The only outcome i can think was it was stitched in Photoshop?

How would even go about taking a picture like this?

That's a composite of multiple shots, at least 11 images.

Tripod, high speed continuous shooting mode & remote shutter release, then layer mask parts of each shot.

The guy who took the pic says in his Flickr stream that there was lots of masking involved so I'm assuming he has shot a burst series of pics and then blended them together in photoshop using masks to only show the image of the person in each after overlaying them all on top of each other or similar.

You could ask him directly though the link to the picture is here.

Not that difficult once you see how it's done but it is very creative. I like it! I've tried using the strobe mode on my flash. That is trickier.

You don't necessarily need a motor drive / fast camera so long as your subject can reasonably consistently repeat the same jump 11-12 times. Just shoot 1 frame, each a little further through the movement than the next. And then, yes, lots of photoshop layering.

It never works out though. A lot tougher!

Just been following my Flickr trackbacks - been lurking here for a while, funny one of my pics should show up! Here's a quick rundown on the tech:

No tripod. I'd recommend using one, it'll make your post production much simpler. However this was quite a dynamic situation to be shooting in, so I was locked in with a wide lens, pre-set exposure (sky was dead so the exposure barely changed all day) and high motor drive (8fps) for most of the day. I saw this just as it began happening and pretty much sprayed.

So into post; my images don't line up correctly and I've panned a fair bit. I let PS do the heavy lifting, automating the panorama alignments and blending. This came out pretty well, and didn't take long to clean up. At this point I duplicated the layers and grouped them separately to work on the subject matter. Spent a few hours masking each frame individually then decided on a layer order.

Shooting from a fixed position would have made this a much simpler process - only the masking would need to be done. Or you can take the Chase Jarvis approach mentioned above; use your own lighting and make sure your subject is on a black background, then just bring all the layers into photoshop in lighten blend mode, done correctly there should be hardly any retouching required.
