Next year I'll be taking 3 photos at my sisters wedding. One of them is of her, her bridesmade and two flower girls.

The girls will be 5 and 2 years old. The setting is fields and trees and lakes if the weather is good.

How would you pose them? Given the different heights, would you have them both hold a child each? Kneel down next the them, have them just at full length

any examples you had would be great to see.

any seats, steps or benches you can use?

What time next year might be an important factor, also that's a long way away to be thinking about poses already? If you're not confident working with young kids, then at least you've got time to practice I suppose, or I tend to hunt around at other photographers ideas and create a scrapbook.

Fields, trees, lakes also means mud, especially if the girls are dressed up. Also at those ages they'll probably not take direction too well, so the best thing is to make it fun and just shoot them having fun. You'll get much better, more natural shots that way.

Bubbles work well with young kids. Early learning sell a pack of 6 bubbles for £3, and you've always got some as a bribe for afterwards.

Thanks for the advice. I'm definitely comfortable photographing children since one of them will be my own and I've already had 14 months of practice with her

I like the idea you and jay said about not posing them, just let them interact.

Oh and by the way, what happened to:

I can guess ;)

I took you off ignore once we could start discussing photography again.

All ages of kids are different as are the sexes makes a difference. Just recently I've shot a 9 month old baby and kids ranging from 2 to 10, all were different and I had to think on my feet but my previous work with youth groups comes in (plus I'm a big kid at times).

Personally I quite like the mischievous ones. You get such great expressions.

Had one parent last week apologise to me about their sons behaviour. The 4 year old was hyper and taking, the 8 year old was painfully shy. We had a bit of fun with bubbles (and mess) to break the ice, nothing that cutting 6 foot off the roll of paper didn't cure.

Photo's came out great though. I wish I had my camera as the mum cried when we got to the shot of the Dad and his shy son cuddled up to him.

I would try one with all four wlking towards you, bride one end, bridesmaid the other and the flower girls in the middle, all holding hands. You (or someone else) then needs to be making them laugh. THen get them to walk away from you, so you have an nice shot of the back of all the dresses.

The reason I asked about seating, is because I hate photos when people are hunched over, so getting them all to sit down on different height steps, or line up on a bench or something similare removes any chance of hunched shoulders.

i like that idea, walking towards will work. I'm thinking laughing like you suggest and also a nice one would be the BM looking down at one talking and the bride looking at the other, both girls looking up at them respectively all smiling like they are in mid convo.

whether we can get my daughter to hold her cousins hand is another question altogether, she's a bit selective
