How would you rate this 1100D + 2 Lenses deal?

My friend is looking for a DSLR and the rents have agreed to get her one for Crimble.

How would you guys rate this deal?

I use the 75-300 myself and love it although I'd advise her to upgrade the 18-55 once she has a good grip on how things work in the world of DSLRs.

She is already creatively and technologically minded, so would the 1100D be enough to start out, or would a slightly higher (Maybe a mid-range?) camera be better? I have to admit, I'm not massively clued up on the 1100D.

The general consensus is that the Canon 55-250 IS is a better zoom lens. Personally, I'd prefer to go with the 55-250 over the 75-300, even if slightly more expensive. Also, it isn't clear if that is the 18-55 IS lens with it. Certainly, the picture of the body+kit lens shown here: http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/canon-...mera-with-18-55mm-zoom-lens-09819591-pdt.html appears to be a non-IS version (no IS switch). It looks like a mk III version of the lens - I can only finmd a brief mention of this lens on Wikipedia which says it is sharper than its predecessors (which is good!). None of the standard lens review sites have it even down as a lens that is available, so critical review is difficult.

Personally, I'd go with a better body and IS version of the kit lens - even if it is stretching it a bit (e.g. 550D+18-55IS @£549 on Currys site, but available for £520 on Amazon)

There was an article mentioning the new 18-55mk3 non IS lens on DP Review, it is the identical optics to the 18-55 IS, Canon released it as a cheaper kit lens to the IS and removed the IS as cost cutting.

Image quality wise, they said it is identical to the IS version.
 
I doubt its the IS, whenever Canon bring out these deals at work they always supply non IS versions of the lenses...

It's more than likely, it seems what Canon have done by releasing the non-IS version of the newer kit lens is differentiate what you get by body. Buy a 600D or 60D, get the IS kit lens, buy an 1100D, get the same lens sans IS.
 
If you bought it with just the 18-55mm it'll be the IS but when they throw in these telephoto lenses they just supply non-IS versions...

Better "Technology" doesnt mean better pictures. Let her get what her parents can afford, and then let her master the art. Remember, better lenses are what will matter, however giving her lenses that cover a range from 18-300mm, give her change to experiment.
 
IMO you may be better adding some money to it and getting a 550D, with a twin lens kit of 18-55 Is and the 55-250 IS. Both lenses are very good for kit lenses, the 55-250 being a terrific lens for the money, sharp and snappy. You should be able to find one for around £600 and well worth the extra money for the extra quality.
I got a 550D last christmas and brought a 75-300 MkIII lens to go with it. Unfortunately, I only kept mine for around a month as it was noisy, had no IS and the IQ was poor. Even if you still go for the 1100D (which is a really decent camera) you really should forget the 75-300 lens and look for a 55-250IS on the classifieds here. I got one in mint condition for only £110 delivered.

Not necessarily true, Jessops, for example, sells the 1100D with the non IS mark3 lens. Pretty sure Currys/PC World does as well.
