Hoya CPL filter

I've got a couple of these filters and they are grand. Your shots will be a bit softer than with a really good filter, you'll need to shoot raw in case there is a colour cast that needs tweaking and it may flare in strong light. But if it's not something that will stay permanently on your lens or will be used in some "essential" shoot, then go for it. At that price you can't go wrong - though if you do like the effect you may end up buying a better filter for more money later on!

ahh right, cheers. I see your point about buying cheaper and then buying again later on. I will consider it, I dont want to make rushed choices just to get one cheaply and quickly.

If you are going for a Hoya, have a look for a PRO1 CPL second hand.
These are multi-coated and are a much better filter than the standard ones. The 'buy cheap-buy twice' saying is very true, try to make make your budget stretch if at all possible.

Make sure its genuine if you do buy it

The proper ones have Japanese writing on the case rather than Chinese.

Got one myself and seems fine although I haven't got anything pricier to compare it with

It's a bit like a tripod - buy a cheap one at first to see if you use it and you'll get good shots and be happy enough, then decide to spend a bit more and be happier, then spend a bit more again and finally have the right one for the job. You'll have saved money by just getting the right one in the first place!

But.... The people who are fanatical about filters are also too far at the other end of the scale. I've seen people promise doom and gloom on beginners with kit lenses who don't put a 200 quid filter in front of it. That's clearly too far in the opposite direction!

I was wondering about these, do you reckon they are ok then John?

did some research before buying CP/L..............................

read this lab report...."link"
Marumi and B+W came out tops
[ BTW Hoya came out tops in their UV tests]

couldn't afford either top models
[ BTW Hoya top of line HD is well reported - too expensive for me.....:(
so bought Marumi 72mm DHG slimline CP.L - joint 4th
works well on Sigma 17-70mm f2.8, but at 17mm you have to be careful as the PL effect isn't always uniform across the sky
caused by WA not a filter fault

very impressed by build quality - & bought a 72mm Marumi DHG Protector
from Crooked Image shop not their website - shop cheaper!

John

Kenko....dont they do coffee?

I purchased an Hoya HRT cir-pl Uv for £27 uk sourced
