Im after a new 77mm circular polariser but not sure which one to go for.I was happy with my 82mm Pro 1 but now needing a different size i see there is the Pro 1 or HD versions--so which is the better of the 2 and why? Is the price difference worth it. I will be using it on a Nikon 24-70 for landscapes, cars etc....
 
Just a thought if you already have a 82mm polariser why not get a step up ring (77mm to 82mm)? You would not be be able to use a lens hood but that would get in the way when using a polariser any way.would be a lot cheaper than buying a new 77mm polariser when you already have one.
 
I have the Pro 1 on my 24-70 and have no issues with vignetting or quality.

Did look at the HD but the Pro1 was pricy enough and I had one a while ago and like it.
 
Hey I got a Pro 1 on my Nikon 24-70mm and the Hoya HD on my Nikon 70-200mm. Might be my imagination but the HD seems to be cleaner attracts less dust and finger marks?

Both are great image wise though! Got mine from Amazon

I have used both- had a pro1 until I stood on it accidentally- robust but not that robust:lol:

Still, it at least allowed me to buy the HD version. The HD version is better- it block less light than the pro1 version and it's noticeable. It's still as effective and is easier to clean- although the most I tend to do is a blast with the rocket blower. My pro1 was sometimes a pain if it happened to get a finger mark probably in part due to the coating. It was still good but I prefer the new one.

It's definitely worth it although watch the prices as they fluctuate quite a bit or at least they used to. A while since I have looked but I remember one week it was £50 then £140 then £90 then £50. Very bizarre although it was a couple of years ago I'm sure so things move on.
 
Supposedly the HD allows over 1 stop more light in than the Pro1 and polarizes better a long with it! Great if you're hand holding.
 
I've been looking into these filters recently as I'd like one for my Sigma 70-200 2.8. From what I can gather, the Pro1 blocks 2 stops of light whereas the HD blocks only 1 and 1/6th of a stop (almost doubling your SS, very useful for sports). I also believe the Nikon CPL is pretty good in this respect, blocking 1 and 1/2 stops, so sits between the Pro1 and HD in this respect.

IQ wise, from what I've read I don't think there's much (if anything) between them.

HD is better. It reduces overall exposure by 1.2 stops as opposed to 1.7 of most others, including the Pro-1.

The HD coating is also more robust, and in particular is doesn't mark with dried-on rain drops.

Prices of filters seem to vary up and down all the time on Amazon, with no pattern :thinking:
 
I've just had a look in my bag and I've got a Pro-1 that's never been used (and likely to stay that way) but it's a 67mm and not a 77mm. I used a CPL once on an 18-55 IS 58mm lens and never got on with it. I'm not keen on the effect to be honest, so probably will never get used. I have got a 77mm but it's a cheap one that I got for one shoot and never used it then either.

CPLs don't always work, or do very much, you need some polarised light about. But seriously, give it another go. Best filter ever!

LOL :D Think I paid £57 for a 77mm HD a couple of years ago.
