Yes
I have a lens which has a 72mm thread size and I'm looking to buy a hoya r72 which has a 77mm thread size. My question is could I use a step down ring with this and would this create any light leakage?

I think it should be OK.
Doubt if light could sneak through the filter threads.
Hopefully the step down ring should have black threads, just in case.

pedant mode on...

surely a 72mm lens to 77mm filter would need a step up ring.

a 77mm lens to a 72mm filter needs a step down ring.

otherwise the male and female threads will not match up

pedant mode off...

Lol you are correct! Didn't have my thinking cap on this morning, my question still stands though. Would it cause vignetting?

edit: got myself confused now...

if you've a 72mm diameter lens and a 77mm filter, with a single step-up ring, then i'd expect things to be fine - maybe a little more likely to vignette than a straight 72mm, but only noticeable on a UWA lens.

I've actually got a 52mm to 77mm step-up ring on a wide angle pinhole camera purely to avoid vignetting (well - that and i've got a set of 77mm black and white colour effect filters which i'm too tight to buy again at 52mm )

Well the lens I would be using it on would be my Sigma 17-70mm so its not too wide. I think I might just take the risk and get the filter anyway :)

Stepping up from the lens, stepping down from the filter. Depends which end you're looking at it from.

Different suppliers sometimes use the terminology differently so be very careful when ordering on line.

I use some 77mm filters with a 67mm lens and a step up ring. Not noticed any light leak issues with my strong nd filter or infrared filter (but I've only used that a couple of times).
