Does anyone know where I can buy or download a Hyperfocal Distance Calculator please.

I want one that I can keep in my bag, not for use on a laptop or mobile

Something like a circular slide rule type, got something similar for reciprocal
aperture/shutter settings

Tried in a local camera shop and they could only suggest an apps download

Tried that first one last week and could never get the print copy to work and the help section was saying not supported by Windows anymore

Unfortunately I use an APSC sensor, just my luck

If all you want to know is hyperfocal distance, there is only one focus setting per focal length and f/number (obviously!) so all you have to do is run the calcs through www.dofmaster.com and write them down. Just six numbers for each of your favourite focal lengths, say about six of those, so only 36 numbers in total and you're done. (In practise you never use hyperfocal distance settings except in wide-ish angle landscapey stuff - it's just not practical with longer lenses as infinity is so far away.)

I did this a little while ago and then realised that actually what you want to know is not the hyperfocal distance as such, but the minimum distance that will be sharp, ie the nearest point of the hyperfocal range. Generally speaking, that's the thing you need to measure, so write that figure down on your scale. When you have then selected the right f/number to give you sharp focus at that closest point, set the lens to double that distance (which is always the hyperfocal distance). Like this:

You have set up the shot and it looks right with 24mm set on the zoom, and you want sharp focus at 2m from the camera to infinity. Check your chart and that tells you f/8. So set f/8 and focus at 4m (double 2m).
 
Going to try the suggestions out and see what looks/works best for me thanks for all your help:thumbs:

No iphone just a bog standard old Nokia because basically i hate the bloody things and Sony Walkman mp3 player. Bit behind the times I reckon, but life is complicated enough:)

Why not just use Excel to work out the HFD for each lens you've got, print the table and stick them onto the outside of your lens's hood?

That's what I've done to all my lens; and this way I don't have to workout anything when out shooting.

Here's the equation to work it out.
