I used to have a Sony dslr that I sold many years ago and miss it. I have an opportunity to get a Nikon d3200 with a standard lens for $300.00 from a pawn shop or a Canon EOS 60d with a pretty good lens for $500.00. Which do you think is the best buy?
 
standard lesn and pretty good lens dont help us to help you.. not telling us what type of photogrpahy doesnt help either.. or in short.. more info required :)
 
I understand. Im honestly not sure the type of lenses they have because the pawn shop doesn't understand what to tell me, lol. I know the lens on the canon is not what you would normally get with it if you bought it in a package type deal. It's much longer. Aside from the lenses, I was really just looking to see what would be a better deal to get something that I would normally use on my children and have nice pictures. Something definitely long term that I can grow with and pick and buy better lenses down the line and maybe turn it into something for myself. Alot of people still ask me if I take pictures and I took a very long break from it when i was entry level. So by no means am I professional but Im looking to get back into it because I miss it and maybe I will become a professional down the line :)
 
to be honest i wouldnt buy from a pawn broker as you and they have no idea of condition , actuations, or even if its nicked and there won't be any warranty. I don't know where you are in the world,(I'm assuming not UK based on $ pricing) but my suggestion would be second hand from a dealer or new from a dealer.

as to which system for what you want its pretty much even - if you like Sony before you might be best getting one again, but realistically any main manufacturer will be fine
 
long lens could be anything tbh. could be a low end canon 70-300 for instance which isnt much better than standard kit lens in terms of quality ( and in fact can be worse ).
best to go back to the shop and get the full details of the lenses offered on both cameras.
in terms of which is the better camera , its that age old argument but in reality its whatever feels best in the hand for you first and foremost.

both have pros and cons. nikon higher resolution, more wb presets more focus points. canon articulated display, faster shutter speed, wb bracketing, water and dust resistant and longer battery life.
but they key thing is lenses.. no matter how good a camera with poor glass in front its going to suffer the consequences.
 
I think honestly I might just go with the Nikon. As I said before I was more entry level to begin with and reading some of the reviews it seems the Nikon is geared more towards that. I know a pawn shop is probably not the best place but for the price and opportunity to get back into it on the get go I think Im just going to go with that and see how it goes. I feel like it would be a win win regarding the price to see how it goes. I can also upgrade down the road if my passion with it takes off. Im located in South Carolina :)
 
The nikon is definitely the more entry level of the two , however be aware that according to google you can get one new for between $250 and $360 (depending on who you buy from) , so $300 used with no guarantee and uncertain quality isnt that great a deal

in the UK they are £229 (which works out at about 350 USD) , but kit is usualy more expensive this side of the pond
