I have a budget of around £850 and I am after a lens. Here's what I want.

I want a landscape lens preferably that I can carry around and use generally as well.

My main camera is a a D300s and my spare a D90.

I am being pulled towards the Nikon 16-55 lens, it has some good reviews but this is a FX lens and I am wondering if I would be wasting my money having a cropped sensor.

I am hoping someone can come along and offer some advice as to which lens I should seriously consider.

I prefer to stick with Nikkor lenses.

I agree on the 17-55 front. I have one on my d300 and it is brilliant! Cannot fault it and I managed to pick up a perfect condition one for £550! I don't really intend to upgrade to FX anytime soon and for the money it's your best bet.
 
Is 17mm going to be wide enough for you? Have you thought about Nikons 12-24 or Tokina 11-16. Both give you a wider end for landscapes, the Nikon will also give you a nice 36mm ( equivalent) for general use.

Thanks for your comment, much appreciated. I have looked at the nikon lens you suggest and had a bit of a play. It's a cracking lens but not what a am looking for, it's a tad too wide for me and a bit to specialised.

Well, I finally opted for a second hand 17-55mm that I picked up on ebay for £600. £250 below what I had to spend.

The lens arrived the day I set off to Cornwall for a long weekend (last Wednesday) so I managed to get the opportunity to play around with it whilst I was away.

First impressions are that this is a beaut of a lens, absolutely thrilled with the results. I used it to take landscape shots, portraits in fact it was never off the camera.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. This is the first second hand lens I have purchased for my own use and was a bit worried as to what I would get.

Love it. If I get chance tonight I will post up a couple of images from my trip.
